Protecting Your Financial and Health Care Interests With Powers of Attorney

You should have a power of attorney in place.  In the event you become incapacitated through injury or disability, or you are no longer able to properly manage your finances, having a trusted person designated as your power of attorney can make all the difference for you and your loved ones.

At Laffey, Sebranek, Auby & Ristau, S.C., we have been helping people in Wisconsin draft and execute power of attorney documents for more than 50 years. You can rely on us to guide you through the process and provide you with peace of mind about your future.

What is a Power of Attorney?

A power of attorney provides a person of your choice (your “agent”) with the legal authority to make decisions and take actions on your behalf. These decisions or actions may involve your finances or health care:

  • Financial power of attorney: If you are unable to manage your finances for any reason, your agent can step in and make sure that your bills and other financial obligations are paid, and taxes are filed on time. Individuals frequently designate an adult child or other trusted relative as their agent to manage their finances during a period of incapacity or assigning temporary authority to complete a transaction.

  • Medical power of attorney: Your agent can make decisions about your medical treatment in the event you are disabled or incapacitated. This includes temporary authority while you undergo surgery or longer-term authority if you become incapacitated and are no longer able to make your own medical decisions.

3 Generations of Family

Contrary to the name “power of attorney”, your designated agent does not have to be an attorney. Your agent can be a close friend, an adult child, an extended family member, or anyone else you trust with these important decisions and authority.
